by The Story of
The Millau Viaduct
by Charlotte M Thornton
An Impossible Dream for fifty plus years, a Croquis Design Idea for traversing the largest canyon in Europe suddenly was able to overcome stakeholder morass to be transformed to an award winning civil-environmental engineering solution. Then Voilà, three years to Commissioning, under budget ahead of schedule, The Millau Valley that habitually represented a disconnect so vast and impossible for travelers of global culture and trade between France and The Meditterrean was spanned so as to cut four hours from trips. The stand still two lane traffic was polluting the entire Tarn Valley ecosystem and ville of Millau in the canyon. Naysayers could not imagine a bridge design nor project plan that all could agree on, much less afford, or construct. From a single croquis that excited all, a bridge of seven towers, building on, and built buy the legacy of the 1889 Eiffel Tower, span the Tarn River and its plethora of hairpin turns throughout a canyon well deserving to be saved from car emissions from stall traffic as if it were a city.
The Millau Viaduct, now connecting all, is all things to all people: for those that are racing between Paris and Barcelona, four hours have been shaved off; for those wanting to protect this Grand Canyon of Europe, a new cultural and aesthetic icon draws the touristic traveler into the Canyon to visit the now infinitely preserved town of Millau and the Canyon's ecosystems. To look up and experience the tallest bridge in the world is now synonymous with experiencing the Canyon, cars flying high at 300 m, and a mirage of sail boats racing on a dark calm sea at night. Special engineering facilitates rainbows and are often seen for the science of light put to work by architects and engineers wanting to leave a legacy of legacies.
So what gives with the world's Supply Chain consumers and suppliers stuck on a willingness to accept fossil fuel dependency as inevitable? Is Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) really an option given the Gas Fracking debate goes unresolved, even squelched? Are we, the consumer-suppliers not the owner of the global economy and its chain? And if so, when allied, are we not able to effect the change from Fossil Fuels to all non-depletables as our preferred fuels of our future?
We believe we not only can, but must. We have formed The Clean Copper Supply Chain Alliance, pbc (public benefits corporation) in order to declare the blueprint, project schedule, and management thereof as open for business, looking for allies, ready to launch. We don't have all the answers, yet, but allied, we can, we will -- and put on a project schedule, success is without question for supply chain managers are the best project managers, are we not?
Let us divide up the work and get after it!
We are here as an initial gamified platform waiting for those supply chain collaborators, the early adopters, to roll up sleeves and get to work.
Congresses, policy makers, and global press do not manage our Global Supply Chain. We do. While Paris COP 21 talks may be of interest and declared successful COP talk by COP Talk, for many others, they mean more regulatory compliance, costs and Carbon Taxes to be reckoned.
Enter our Driver's Seats: Clean Copper™. Did you know -- what while Oil & Gas is a high profit margin Extractive Industry, its assets (booked oil reserves, i.e. inventory) are now deemed as Stranded Assets by most all Institutional Investors. And indeed they are: the top major Oil Cos have been forced by shareholders to have on file their plan for their Stranded Assets defined as booked assets that when combusted (used) they will tip the climate beyond 3 degrees of the UN IPCC irreversible line.
Copper on the other hand is already 80% recycled. For it to be the leading edge sustainble Extractives sector, it needs to realized that operating on 99% Solar & Hydrogen non-depletables could cause it to be the missing Hero on the scene of all Sustainbility groups across the supply chain. To date, Big Copper is satisfied to comply with the copper industry's own written milestones. It is time that a group of Allied Downstream Consumers and Suppliers call on Big Copper and invite them up to bat. They have so much to offer initiatives such as Sustainable Brands, Green Biz VERGE, and Ethical Corporation's opportunities for collaboration among industry sectors, yet Big Copper is as yet not showing up outside of their own Groupthink.
We advocate a different kind of quota for different reasons: the pollution in our cities and the early deaths, and long term health degradation transport fuels in our cities impose upon us all. If we focus on the total Supply Chain's pollution, the Greenhouse Gases will continually decrease as well.
Today, most all consumers and supply chain stakeholders want to see realized a planet with no pollution, no Greenhouse Gases -- but we all feel helpless when it comes to that Elephant in the Chain, i.e. the fossil fuels in everyone's transport life cycle line item.
We believe Fossil Fuels will continue to be the Achilles Heel of all Sustainable Brands until we -- the suppliers, OEMs, and consumers become allied together and simply mandate our own "moonshot" calling on all Copper to accept the Downstream Challenge to rise to the occasion to become the 21st century leading edge commodity, thereby displacing oil, a commodity upon which copper and copper pricing (including copper producer's profit margins) is dependent.
When the world's copper supply is produced via Solar & Hydrogen Refinery Science, we calculate and intuit a 21st Century Industrial Revolution. Yes, the power of a Consumer-Supplier Alliance can prove out to manifest a bonafide 21st Century Industrial Revolution.
If thought of in terms of a Moonshot, we dub the fast track to the finish line: "Clean Copper™ in The Chain". As it turns out, there are necessarily two sources of Fossil Fuel emissions in everyone's supply chain: both are known as coming from the Extractives industries -- (1) Oil & Gas, and (2) Mining.
Oil & Gas emissions are well understood and codified with data. Not so with metals mining: the good news is, all metals mines can be rationally brought forward to Zero Emission, Zero Waste Deep Ecology standards by simply adopting what we dub as "21st Century Solar & Hydrogen Refinery Science".
And if and when Mining does so, especially copper mining, something magical unfolds: the extreme upstream mining basecamps that currently are the Achilles Heel of Big Mining for their ongoing community uprisings and nationalist pushbacks and disconnects, can become the world's first all Solar & Hydrogen Regional Economies. What is best for the Global Supply Chain is good for upstream mining towns and countries is good for Big Metals Mining, especially copper.
Now -- such a feat is entirely doable and certainly worth celebrating by the consumer and supply chain managers themselves, but to effect change at Big Mining, We the Downstream must make our Message known to the extreme upstream Mining Cos Board rooms.
Humanity's divide over the how, when, and where to progress Beyond Petroleum to a Fossil Fuel Free future can be fast tracked by starting with copper mining regions, and via the operative and mantra of Clean Copper™. And if regionally, then planet wide. The Elephant in the Room for supply chain managers, i.e. the fossil fuel in the overall supply chain, currently mimics one such grand canyon chasm of divide. How overcome the dependency on fossil fuel in one's supply chain transport links and the many modes and fuel types each require as it connects supplier to vendor to consumer to customer?
Disconnects divide us all. Climate Change is one such disconnect. Is it real? Is it man-made? Is our planet doomed? Is it all about Left vs. Right? Buckminster Fuller´s Spaceship Earth is truly fragile, and we are in charge. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall...
We may be divided or still debating Climate Change, but no one can deny that Peking, China c. 1978 had Zero Pollution and today, post Westernization with zillions of cars and new factories, one cannot see but for 2 to 5 feet on a good day in Bejing.
Enter Clean Copper™ Supply Chain Alliance.
Copper™ already unwittingly connects us all. Did you know? Our global supply chain, your job, my job, everybody´s jobs depends upon it! Not so for Fossil Fuels. We can have a theoretically economy without Fossil Fuels, but we cannot have a theoretical economy without copper.
We exist to educate and provide all users, all stakeholders the opportunity to have their voice heard inside Big Copper Mining's boardrooms.
The Clean Copper Supply Chain Alliance, pbc has created many portals for B2 and C2s to Vote with your consumer and supplier dollars for Clean Copper™ -- which is a positive action upon the lever inside Copper Cos Boardrooms that also sends out a Vote for Solar & Hydrogen to displace, liter by liter, gallon by gallon, the fossil fuels in everybody's supply chain. And that means YOU!
